QUALITY ASSURANCE
The installer shall have completed at least three projects of similar joint type and size within the last five years.
- Written description of those projects, including joint widths and substrates.
- Name of the manufacturer who approved the installer, when a warranty is required.
- Evidence that field staff have been trained by the sealant manufacturer.
DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING
Deliver materials in unopened containers bearing the manufacturer's name, product name, color, and shelf-life date. Store materials within the temperature range printed on the container. Reject materials that are older than their shelf life.
PROJECT CONDITIONS
Do not apply sealant when the substrate temperature is below 40 degrees F(4 degrees C) or above 100 degrees F(38 degrees C), unless the manufacturer approves a different range in writing.
PRODUCTS
ELASTOMERIC SEALANTS
Sealant shall be a nonsag elastomeric compound meeting ASTM C920, Type S or M, Grade NS, Class 25 or greater, and the use classification the joint requires.
| Class | Movement | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Class 25 | Plus or minus 25 percent | General building joints |
| Class 50 | Plus or minus 50 percent | Wider building joints |
| Class 100/50 | Plus 100, minus 50 percent | Expansion joints |
Color shall be .
Verify the movement class against ASTM C719 for the joint width shown on the drawings.
ACCESSORIES
- Backer rod: closed-cell, compatible with the sealant, and compressed 25 to 50 percent when installed.
- Primer: the sealant manufacturer's primer for the substrate, where the manufacturer requires one.
- Bond breaker: tape that will not adhere to the sealant, where a backer rod cannot be placed.
EXECUTION
PREPARATION
Prepare joints in accordance with ASTM C1193 and the sealant manufacturer's written instructions.
- a.Remove laitance, dust, and coatings that would impair adhesion.
- b.Verify the joint is dry and within the temperature range in the project conditions article.
- c.Install backer rod at the depth that produces the manufacturer's width-to-depth ratio.
- d.Mask adjacent surfaces that are not to receive sealant.
INSTALLATION
Install sealant so that it wets both joint faces and finishes to a slight concave profile. The installed joint width shall be not less than 1/2 inch(13 mm) unless the manufacturer designs a narrower joint for the movement class.
Tool the sealant before a skin forms. Do not use a tooling liquid that the manufacturer has not approved.
FIELD QUALITY CONTROL
Check adhesion in place at the start of the work and once for every 1000 feet(300 m) thereafter, using the method in ASTM C1193. Cut out and replace work that fails. Pull tests shall follow ASTM D412 only when the manufacturer requires a laboratory coupon.
CLEANING
Remove masking while the sealant is still workable. Clean adjacent surfaces without cutting the joint. Leave the work free of smears.
